AEPS in one sentence
The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) lets a customer carry out basic banking at an authorised agent point using their Aadhaar number and fingerprint — no debit card, cheque book or passbook needed.
What customers can do
The services available depend on the bank and the channel, but commonly include:
- Cash withdrawal from an Aadhaar-linked bank account
- Balance enquiry
- Mini statement of recent transactions
How a transaction works
The customer tells the agent which bank their Aadhaar is linked to and the service they need. They then place a finger on a supported biometric device. The request is authenticated and processed with the customer's bank, and the customer receives confirmation of the transaction.
Because authentication uses the customer's own biometrics, they never need to share a PIN or card with the agent.
Why it matters for your business
For shops and business correspondents, AEPS turns the counter into an everyday banking point. Customers who would otherwise travel to a branch or ATM can be served locally, which brings repeat visits to your business.
What you need to get started
Typically you need a supported biometric device, a smartphone or computer with internet access, and onboarding as an agent with a provider. Our team can explain the requirements for your location.
